Center of Molecular Pathology Laboratory/ Department of Pathology

Mission and Objectives

To develop applied research in prevalent cancers in the Chilean population, focusing mainly on the molecular characterization of tumors and the identification and validation of biomarkers for susceptibility, early diagnosis, prognosis and response to treatment.

Main Goal

Short-term goals

* Identification and validation of biomarkers for susceptibility to oncogynecological and digestive tumors.

* Development of screening and diagnosis kits for high-risk subgroups

* Generation of high quality research in the area of the discovery of biomarkers and the incorporation of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the daily work of the laboratory

* Improving our knowledge of carcinogenesis through the development of scientific projects and publishing our results in high impact scientific journals

* Strengthening the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students with new lines of researc

Medium-term goals

* Creation of a center of excellence in biosciences in the School of Medicine, mainly focused on Translational medicine

* Strengthening of international scientific collaboration networks

* Training, specialization and exchange of doctorate and post-doctorate students to obtain jointly-awarded degrees with other Chilean and international universities

* Fundraising and participation in international projects
Long-term goals

* Establishing a reference center in translational cancer research in Chile

* Identification of Biomarkers for screening, selection and response to treatment in carcinogenesis

* Participation in international and national Biobank Networks to allow the study of population genetics

* Creation and certification of a Doctorate Program in Molecular Pathology

* Development of a reference laboratory at the Latin American level in the identification and validation of biomarkers

* Developing research projects linking the University and private companies

* Creation and consolidation of  financial resources to ensure the operation of laboratory
